Chelsea Manning Will Walk Free In May

Obama commutes the remainder of her sentence.

Obama has responded to public calls to free Chelsea Manning by commuting her prison sentence. As one of his final acts in office, Obama announced that Chelsea will walk free on May 17. The former soldier was serving a 35-year sentence for leaking classified documents to WikiLeaks in 2010.

During her time in prison Chelsea underwent gender transition surgery and endured awful treatment that resulted in several suicide attempts. In her application for commutation, she wrote:

"I take full and complete responsibility for my decision to disclose these materials to the public. I have never made any excuses for what I did. I pleaded guilty without the protection of a plea agreement because I believed the military justice system would understand my motivation for the disclosure and sentence me fairly. I was wrong."

Obama's decision then is not only a potentially lifesaving one but also a fair one — freeing Chelsea from the longest ever sentence imposed in the US for a leak conviction.
