Erykah Badu Donates Concert Funds To Rape-Kit Testing Project

Soul fairy godmother Erykah Badu is the gift that keeps on giving. Her latest act of saintliness/social consciousness comes via the announcement that she'll donate a portion of the proceeds from her upcoming concert in Detroit towards testing abandoned rape-kits. Get that justice, girl!

Five dollarydoos from each ticket to her Chene Park Amphitheatre show will go towards African American 490 Challenge — a not-for-profit that works alongside Enough SAID to raise money for the testing of 11,300 abandoned rape-kits that were discovered in a Detroit police warehouse back in 2009.

The kits cost $490 to test (hence the name), and while they've already tested around 10,000, they still need to raise heaps of coin to test the remaining kits, and investigate and prosecute those involved in the thousands of crimes.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy, who once worked alone to find justice for the women whose cases were abandoned, said in a statement:

"This is a huge day for Enough SAID/AA490. Everyone knows that Erykah Badu is a major, major talent in the music and song-writing industry. For her to lend her name, talent and time to this work is nothing short of a miracle. Justice for these forgotten sexual assault victims has been given a phenomenal assist."

Surely Ms. Badu will be collecting that Nobel Prize soon, and while we all wait for that day to come, donations to the 490 Challenge can be made here, and to Enough SAID here
