Meet The Model: Hanalei @ IMG

Surfer girl.
Hanalei Reponty is an ocean girl — she learnt to swin in the sea before she could walk. She was a professional surfer in Tahiti before moving to Australia to go to uni and pursue modelling, as well as run a great website. With a heart as big as the Pacific and a passion for nature, justice and travel — just try not falling in love with her.

Jerico Mandybur: Where are you/your family from and where are you currently living?
Hanalei: My parents are French but moved to Tahiti 25 years ago. I was lucky to be born and raised in Tahiti, a little paradise-filled island lost in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. I moved to Sydney when I was 18 to go to university and the family followed my Australian adventures. They are currently living on the beautiful Northern Beaches of Sydney. I moved to California two years ago to experience the American dream, but my years consist of following the summer (half spent in Australia, half spent in the USA, and in between chasing good times in New York, Europe, or Hawaii).

Earliest childhood memory?
Running naked on the beach with my brother — sandy, salty and sunburnt.

Moment that changed your life?
I learned how to swim before I could walk, when my dad put me on his board in the middle of the line-up, and that is when I discovered the beauty of nature and all the treasures in the ocean. I was born and raised in paradise, and my love for the ocean became unconditional.

Five women you look up to?
My mother, for everything she is and everything she taught me. Rell Sunn, the "Queen of Makaha" for being the light of women's surfing, gracing everyone with her beautiful spirit. Angelina Jolie, for her dedication to people in need, as well as her humanitarian, philanthropic work and political involvement. Aung San Suu Kyi, for her fight for the freedom of her country.

Best piece of advice you ever received?
Always stand for what you believe in.

We heard you were a pro surfer, can you tell us what they was like? Why did you stop?
It was insane. I got to travel the globe for surfing from a really young age, it really opened up my mind and vision of the world and shaped who I am. I got to surf in four different oceans, and chase countless perfect waves. It was the most thrilling experience ever. It gave me along the way, the love of traveling, the passion of discovering new countries, new cultures, new people. There is no better addiction than jumping in a plane into the unknown. When I was 18, I decided to go to university in parallel with my modelling career, instead of competing professionally. I had so much to learn, to do, to see. I still travel and surf as much as I did, I just do it purely for the love of surfing now.

What would your last meal be?
My grandmother's homemade ravioli.

What animal do you identify with the most?
Dolphins, for their love of the ocean and ridding waves, their family and social skills and smartness.

What rules would you instil if you were Supreme Leader of Earth for one day?
1. Give to the ones in need: some people live with a dollar a day, some people have millions locked up in banks. Everyone deserves to live in the right conditions.
2. Instil and protect the human rights for every living soul around the planet regarding religion or social status.
3. Be kind to the earth: stop pollution, deforestation, killing animals, dumping trash in the ocean and everything that comes along with our society that affect the planet and its resources.
4. Oh and candy for everyone!

What song do you really wish you'd written and why?
'This is the first day of my life' by Bright Eyes, because every time I listen to it, it gives me chills.

Best Youtube clip you've ever seen?
Emma Stone lip sync-ing on Jimmy Fallon! Hilarious.

If you were an emoji, which would you be?

Send us a selfie?
