Opening Ceremony for Kenzo

Downtown cool revives ailing fashion house.

They've made biological specimens eminently wearable and pretty much wrote the book on cool collaborations, so the announcement that Humberto Leon and Carol Lim, the duo behind Opening Ceremony, are taking the reigns at Kenzo is super exciting. Leon and Lim, co-founders of the label that practically invented downtown cool, will debut their first collection for Fall 2012.

Established in 1970, French-based Kenzo is the baby of Japanese designer Kenzo Takada who launched his eponymous brand as a fashion, lifestyle and retail concept. The partnership is a natural one for Leon and Lim, who forged Opening Ceremony as a multifaceted label embracing fashion design, retail environments and galleries.

LVMH fashion-division chief Pierre-Yves Roussel has praised the pair, stating that they represent the "jungle spirit" of the Kenzo brand. Let's hope Leon and Lim do not take the compliment too literally, or we'll all be wearing raw leopard hides woven together with vines by this time next year.
