Premiere: BUOY's Dreamy 'Don't Want To See You' Video

Dancing by myself.

Charmian Kingston, aka BUOY, makes emotional pop tunes full of spacy synth sounds that are perfect for dancing alone in your room to. She also has really great hair. We're psyched to be premiering her new video, and to celebrate its release, she answered a bunch of questions for us about dancing, daydreaming and wanting to be an astronaut...

Name: Charmian (shah-me-an)

Nick name: Charms

What were you into in high school?
I was heaps into playing video games, watching TV and daydreaming. I was a shy person who spent a lot of time at home. I was obsessed with doing handstands all the time. I loved singing and I used to go out into the garage and sing for hours where it was all reverb-y, but I never had any confidence in my singing until my last year of high school. My teenage brothers would often tell me to shut up when I sang at home. They've apologised now, haha.

In what ways have you changed since then?
Well, I haven't really played many video games or watched much TV since then. I'm still shy, but now have confidence too.

Can you describe your music in five words?
Spacious, minimal, urgent, floating, open.

If you could have any animal was a pet, what would you choose?
This question puts butterflies in my stomach! I would choose one of the big cats (lion/tiger/leopard) and it would be really tame so that I could cuddle it all the time.

What scares you most?
That there's not enough time for me to do all that I want to.

What's the best YouTube you've ever seen?
Well, the rainbow sponge lady is up there:

What's your favourite soundtrack?
Romeo + Juliet

What three songs are best to dance alone in your room to?
Thom Yorke — 'The Eraser'

Beyoncé — 'Love On Top'

Little Dragon — 'Paris'

What's the origin story of the name BUOY?
I was originally spelling it "Boy", I got the idea from a jumper that I used to have. When I told Jack (my co-producer), he loved the name, but it turned out he was thinking of the floating device "Buoy". That's when it became so clear that BUOY had to be the name because I just love what it represents; floating, water, swimming, space.

If you has to listen to one album for the rest of your life what would you choose?
In Rainbows by Radiohead.

What's the worst piece of advice you've ever received?
"Shave your arms."

What do you want to be when you grow up?
An astronaut.
