Pussy Riot Members To Star In House Of Cards

From jailed activists to Season Three guest stars.

The two freed (possibly-ex) members of Pussy Riot, Nadya Tolokonnikova and Masha Alyokhina, have been confirmed as guest stars in the third episode of the Kevin Spacey-led House of Cards, for Season Three. Yes, really!

The news comes after the show put in a request to be filmed in the United Nations Security Council Chamber, only to have it denied when a Russian diplomat kicked up a fuss. Casting the two activists (who have been spending a lot of time attending polticial protests in America according to their Twitter) is not only brilliant but a perfect troll move against Russia by all involved. Well done. Even if the rest of the members of Pussy Riot find the whole thing very bourgeois.

Now we just have to wait for more details to drop. Will they play themselves, fictionalised versions of themselves or completely new characters? Will they be performing or protesting? Will we see Francis and Claire Underwood wearing balaclava face masks? Does appearing on the show serve to reify the co-optive power of the patriarchal, capitalist spectacle? So many questions.
