Studio Ghibli Returns With Heartwarming/ Heartbreaking Trailer For 'The Red Turtle'

Lonely planet.

The trailer for Michaël Dudok de Wit's debut film The Red Turtle — co-produced by the animation lords over at Studio Ghibli — has just dropped, and it looks sorta like it's going to be a magical take on the Tom Hanks classic Cast Away. The Japanese studio's highly-anticipated comeback promises to deliver on themes of isolation, tragedy and romance, but sadly does not feature the best friend volleyball a guy could ever have.

The silent film, which debuts at Cannes this week, centres on a man who is shipwrecked on an island soley inhabited by turtles, crabs and birds. His getaway attempt is thwarted by a mysterious red turtle, leaving him re-stranded on the island, before a red-haired woman appears (possibly the magic turtle?), and they fall in love and have a baby. As you do.

The Red Turtle marks the first time the London-based animator has worked with the studio, and it definitely shows — the animation aesthetic is completely different to anything to come from Studio Ghibli before. Regardless, it still looks 100% epic and you should get psyched to watch it below:
