Top 5: Models in Movies

These five models aren't just pretty faces (although that definitely helps).

While Sydney-siders everywhere have been adamantly pursuing Leonardo DiCaprio at all the local nighttime hot spots, the cast and crew of The Great Gatsby (including Australian model Gemma Ward, above) have actually been doing some pretty hard work. As the first image of Miss Ward on set is released, we find ourselves both envious and in awe of certain models' ability to do it all, and do it all reasonably well. Not only is Gemma rocking a full-on feathered, sequinned flapper garb, she's also managing to keep her cool working with one of the most prominent actors in Hollywood (although, this is nothing compared to the multiple groups of 20-something girls on perpetual man-hunts in Kings Cross). This isn't the first time Gemma has graced the screen, having landed roles in the Pirates of the Caribbean (2011) franchise and The Black Balloon (2008), and she definitely isn't the only model giving it a go. Here are some of the long-limbed beauties who have walked off the catwalk onto the silver screen, proving that it definitely pays to be multi-talented (and good-looking).

1. Devon Aoki - Sin City (2005)

Devon's lack of lines (she literally has about three in the entire film) takes nothing from her brilliant portryal of Miho, a stone-cold killer with a healthy (?) penchant for blood-shed and a handy knack for disposing of evidence.

2. Lily Cole - Snow White and the Huntsman (2012)

Is there a more honorable way to die than at the hands of a soul-sucking Charlize Theron as she plays a vanity driven, evil queen? I think not.

3. Daria Strokous - Contagion (2011)

In what isn't entirely a far cry from her normal life, Daria Strokous plays Irina Modelskova, a Ukranian supermodel in London who is struck down by a mysterious and deadly ailment. Going from supermodel to compelling actress could well be quite difficult, so it's good to know that Strokous can turn to the likes of Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow and Kate Winslet with any theatrical questions she may have.

4. Natalia Vodianova - Clash of the Titans (2010)

Whenever Natalia Vodianova is in the public eye, she is nothing short of charming - beautiful, amicable and endlessly polite. So, when the Russian supermodel landed the role of Medusa in Clash of the Titans last year, we were surprised, to say the least. But footage of her hissing, spitting and being a general menace has novelty value that's too high to ignore ? for once, Natalia Vodianova actually looks bad!

5. Liya Kebede - Desert Flower (2009)

Once again, a model playing a model - although this time in a leading role! This is not to suggest that this movie is anything less than a tear-jerker, though. Liya Kebede, what a tough cookie!
