Watch The Trailer For 'The Artist Is Absent: A Short Film On Martin Margiela'

Feat. Jean Paul Gaultier and Raf Simons, not featuring Martin Margiela.

Notoriously private designer Martin Margiela is the subject of a new documentary that tracks his career and innovative contributions to the world of fashion and haute couture — without showing him once. Throughout the short film, you won't see or hear the designer who has remained anonymous throughout his entire career.

The Artist is Absent (the name's a play on Marina Abramović's performance art piece The Artist Is Present) tells the story of Martin Margiela through the words and experiences of those whom know the elusive couturier and his work best. The 12-minute short film includes accounts from designers Raf Simons and Jean Paul Gaultier, and journalist Suzy Menkes. The film does not, however, feature the recently appointed creative director John Galliano (maybe because of this business).

The condensed documentary, directed by Alison Chernick and produced by Yoox, debuted at Tribeca Film Festival over the weekend and will be available to watch online from April 27 via Yoox.com.
