Weird AF Netflix 'Casting JonBenét' Documentary Gets First Teaser
"Do you know who killed JonBenét Ramsey?"
On paper, Netflix's new doco Casting JonBenét is super creepy. The first clip is even more so. Eight small girls line up in a waiting room, dressed in patriotic pageant-wear, excited to audition for the part of JonBenét Ramsey. The scene cuts to a single girl who introduces herself: "My name is Hannah," she says. "And I'm auditioning for the role of JonBenét Ramsey. Do you know who killed JonBenét Ramsey?"
JonBenét's tragic death, and the unsolved case surrounding it, has been the subject of many documentaries and TV specials. Especially last year, around the mark of the 20 years since the incident. This documentary is a little different.
The concept is a "documentary hybrid" that will mix fact, memory and legend surrounding JonBenét's death. Directed by Kitty Green, the filmmakers went to JonBenét's hometown of Boulder, Colorado to ask the community about her death and the sensationalised stories that came from it. According to Netflix, it "examines how this crime and its resulting mythologies have shaped the attitudes and behaviour of successive generations of parents and children."
It premiers at Sundance this weekend, and launches globally on Netflix in April this year.
